Brothels Shut Down In Derby.

Police officers have shut down two brothels in the Normanton area of Derby with help from the community.

Over recent months Peartree Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team received numerous calls from residents complaining of suspicious behaviour in relation to suspected brothels being run on Osmaston Road and Moore Street.

The properties in question were receiving up to 40 visits each night from customers both in cars and on foot.

Residents also complained of females knocking on their doors soliciting sexual activity and also witnessing sexual acts in parked cars nearby.

Even though initial arrests were made and related street crimes were dealt with the illegal behaviour continued, with boys as young as 14 being propositioned in the street.

Direct support from local councillors, the local community and the landlords of both properties meant that officers were able to evict the females involved and close down both addresses.

With one house, all of the females working in and around the address were arrested and after being charged failed to answer bail.

They were tracked down to Liverpool and arrested. After going to court three of the girls left the country and the remaining girl was evicted by the landlord.

For the other house anti-social behaviour legislation was used and a court date booked. When the file was presented to the landlord he carried out an eviction due to an invalid tenancy agreement.

As a result of this positive action, a neighbourhood watch scheme has been formed and a multi-agency approach will continue where local officers work with the Community Safety Partnership to improve lighting and security in the area.

Work is taking place to educate and deter the females from falling back into these activities and landlords are also being educated as to the signs of brothel activity and how to avoid it with their properties.

PC Carl Anderson from the team said: "We would like to thank everyone involved for their support and efforts in making this happen.

"Through partnership working in particular with local residents, we are able to take positive action and improve the quality of life for those who live and work in the area.

"We encourage the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to us, this way we can be more effective and target the areas that require our attention."
