Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

She's rarely out of the papers but, until the release of her single, 'The Fear' in January, she hadn't been in the charts since providing the vocals for Mark Ronson's cover of 'Oh My God' in July 2007.

Largely held up by disruption at her record company, EMI, Lily makes her long-awaited return with her second album, 'It's Not Me, It's You' on February 9th.

As the title suggests, the album continues where her debut, 'Alright, Still...' left off, packed full of hummable pop tunes with a sense of humour and even a touch of social commentary.

Whether it's fame-hungry, Z-List celebrities ('The Fear') former US president, George W Bush ('F**k You') or useless lovers ('Not Fair'), Lily never shies away from speaking her mind, but does so in such a sweet-sounding voice, that you could be forgiven for thinking she was singing a nursery rhyme!

It's not all laughs though, with Lily showing off a more introspective side to her personality on tracks like the piano-based slowie 'I Could Say'. "Since you've gone, I've lost that chip on my shoulder..." she sings about a broken relationship, while the retro-sounding "He Wasn't There" sees her tackle her absent father. "I'm so pleased I never gave up on him, oh well, you wouldn't believe some of the things that he did". Well, at least it had a happy ending...

While she certainly doesn't struggle in the lyrical department, she's admittedly rips off the melody from Take That's 'Shine' on the song, 'Who'd Have Known' which, for someone whose music has always sounded so fresh and original, is not such a good thing.

Still, this mishap aside, we're pleased to report that 'It's Not Me, It's You' is well worth the wait and should silence more than a few of her critics. To listen to the album for yourself, visit her official Myspace page.
